How to use this table for Physics
Physics chapters depend on each other more than the table suggests. Kinematics, Laws of Motion and Work, Energy & Power are not at the top by weightage, but free-body diagrams and energy methods from these chapters show up in questions across the whole subject. Get them solid first, even though the table ranks them lower.
The class 12 electricity chapters form one connected block: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnetic Induction & AC. Study them in that order, back to back, and solve their previous-year questions as you finish each one.
Experimental Skills is easy to overlook because it has few questions, but they come from a fixed list of experiments in the syllabus, such as the vernier calipers, screw gauge and simple pendulum. Learning the setup of each experiment and its error analysis covers most of what gets asked.
Frequently asked questions
The Physics chapters with the most expected marks are Properties of Solids & Liquids (~12 marks, 8.5%), Electrostatics (~10 marks, 7%), Optics (~10 marks, 7%), based on 4,499 solved previous-year questions (2023–2026).
8 of the 20 Physics chapters cover about 50% of expected marks, and the top 10 cover about 60%. Giving those chapters more of your time pays off more than spreading it evenly across every chapter.
Class 11 chapters carry about 53% of expected Physics marks and Class 12 chapters about 46%. Both years count, so you can't afford to skip Class 11 Physics.
Electromagnetic Waves (~4 marks, 2.8%), Dual Nature of Matter & Radiation (~4 marks, 2.8%) and Thermodynamics (~5 marks, 3.5%) carry the fewest expected Physics marks. Leave them until the higher chapters are secure, but don't skip them: they still come up, and short chapters are quick to cover.
No. Optics has the most previous-year questions in our Physics data (148), but Properties of Solids & Liquids carries more expected marks (~12 against ~10). Rank your study by expected marks, which is what this table sorts by, rather than by how many questions a chapter has.
Study the class 12 electricity chapters as one block, in this order: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism & Magnetic Effects of Current, then Electromagnetic Induction & Alternating Current. Each builds on the last. Do Kinematics, Laws of Motion and Work, Energy & Power before all of them, because the rest of Physics uses their methods.
Each topic has an expected-marks value calculated from 4,499 solved JEE Main PYQs (2023–2026), and a chapter's weightage is the sum of its topics' expected marks. The numbers are recalculated when new papers are added.
