(IV) is a methyl furanose ring with an exocyclic HOCH2-CH(OH)- arm and ring hydroxyls, one ring carbon also carrying a CH3. (V) is 3-methylpentane-2,3-diol, drawn as CH3CH2-C(OH)(CH3)-CH(OH)-CH3. (VI) is 2,3-dimethylbutane-1,2,3-triol, with two hydroxyl-bearing quaternary carbons and one CH2OH.
